About Jason
I’ve spent my life learning trades — the kind you do with your hands and the kind you do at a keyboard. This site is where they finally meet.
A lot of different workbenches
I served in the US Marine Corps. I’ve tended bar, performed as a magician, framed pictures, and built cabinets and furniture as a woodworker. Along the way I learned my way around a house: electrical, plumbing and most of the jobs in between.
Each of those jobs taught me something I still use. Bartending teaches you to read a room. Magic teaches you how attention can be steered — which turns out to be most of what social engineering is. Framing and cabinetmaking teach you that measuring twice is not a cliché.
Twenty-plus years in security
For more than twenty years my day job has been IT security, and I hold a master’s degree in Information Assurance & Security. I care about security that real people can live with: the fix that actually gets done beats the perfect policy nobody follows.
Founder, building in public
Today I run my own companies. Honestly: none of them are profitable yet. I’d rather say that out loud than pretend otherwise — building in public means showing the unglamorous parts too. My school software is used in the Netherlands, and I work with education charities.
Consulting is the part of this site that’s open for business today. The build log is everything else: a garage turning into a maker space and lab, the tools and projects that come out of it, and the honest story of trying to make it all work while protecting family time.
